Thanks to your continued support, Mickaboo Companion Bird Rescue has been able to continue our work of rescuing, rehabilitating, and re-homing companion birds. So far this year, we have accepted and adopted out approximately 40 birds in total, while caring for a flock of ~450. (See photos and read stories about many of our birds here.)

Your donations help birds like Louie, a 15-year-old female blue-fronted amazon. Louie was surrendered to Mickaboo when her guardian could no longer afford Louie’s medical needs. Louie appeared to be having great difficulty breathing, so she was immediately hospitalized and put on oxygen while veterinarians assessed her condition.
The first set of x-rays suggested something was blocking half of Louie’s airflow at the base of her pharynx. More x-rays over a two-week period showed large finger-like growths in the esophagus interfering with Louie’s food intake. Louie’s frantic stretching and head movements were how she had been moving food down her esophagus. Biopsies showed the growths resulted from inflammation (rather than cancer or an infection), possibly due to a vitamin A deficiency. Louie was given a vitamin A injection and other medications; her movements have become far less frantic. Follow-up care will be needed over the next several months.
Louie is now in a Mickaboo foster home where she is talking, laughing, and eating well. She says ‘hello’ and other words in a cute woman’s voice when she thinks no one is listening.
Louie’s vet bills have exceeded $5000 so far. The improvement in Louie's quality of life - priceless! Please consider taking advantage of today's matching gift opportunity to help Louie and our other birds heal and find permanent, loving homes.
The final total is $29,817, essentially matching our $30,000 end-of-year fundraising goal! THANK YOU for your collective generosity! The funds will go a long way toward meeting the medical needs of our foster flock (depending on how needy our birds are, of course - we've spent $40K on one month's bills in the not-too-distant past).
The donor with the mostest is Rhonda Bennon! She will receive the macaw head sculpture created by Scott Shipley, who happens to be one of our very dedicated volunteers.

Azul is one of the birds who benefits from Mickaboo's volunteers. Azul is an older Blue Front Amazon in her 30's with cataracts. She acts like any other blue front amazon except she can't see very well. She plays with toys and takes treats from my foster mom very nicely. Azul could be a very sweet gal for the right person- and she's available for adoption!

Eagle, Mildred, Coffee, Mocha, and George are a few of the many birds benefitting from your collective generosity. They are about 12 years old and have been in an aviary most, if not all, their lives, in the San Jose area. They all appear to be males, are all healthy and and very active .. especially around feeding time. Their surrender to Mickaboo was caused by a combination of a marital separation and subsequent move - a story we often hear at Mickaboo.

Harry is one of the foster birds who benefits from Mickaboo's services. He is a teenaged (in bird years) male Patagonian Conure with a bit of a mysterious past. Harry's last owner loved him dearly but was not in a situation to keep him any longer. His foster parent is teaching him about toys (he didn't have any before) and the social skills he'll need to thrive in a permanent home.

Bishop is one of the many birds benefitting from your collective generosity. He is about six years old and was surrendered to Mickaboo by a person who had to move to a non-pet-friendly home. He is bonded to Tommy, whom he met in foster care. Tommy was literally rescued when he flew away from his guardian and was attacked by a flock of crows. Bishop sings and whistles a little bit, and will also call out loudly when Tommy is not nearby. He enjoys playing with palm shredder toys and likes helping Tommy to play and enjoy himself too.

Jolie is one of the birds who benefits from Mickaboo's volunteers. Jolie is a lovely gray mutation Indian Ringneck girl. She went on an adventure outdoors and got lost. Lucky for her a nice lady found Jolie, saving her from an uncertain fate. Now she is in a nice Mickaboo foster home and living the good life, learning to love a great pellet-based diet and vegetables. Jolie is a really smart and curious girl, eager to learn new things. She also enjoys flying, napping, bathing, and whistling - and she's available for adoption!

Sparkle is one of the birds benefitting from your collective generosity. She is a very young (we think around 4 MONTHS old) budgie who somehow escaped from her former guardian and, luckily, wound up at a shelter instead of becoming a predator's lunch or dying of starvation. Most shelters are not equipped to handle avian medical emergencies, and this one was no different - so they called Mickaboo when Sparkle started bleeding from a broken blood feather. Sparkle is just fine now - and is up for adoption! (Email coordinator-parakeet@mickaboo.org if you're interested!)
