11/08/07. Hi! Its a whole new me! I passed the DNA test with flying colors and the truth is out. I am a lady bird. My foster mom says I have the sweetest little voice and the dearest little ways
(plus I was making hootchy kootchy sounds while sitting in my food dish) all of which were a good indication that I was thinking of making a nest. I am waiting patiently for just the right home but my mom says I will have my own holiday stocking on the mantel just in case I'm still in my foster home for a while.
8/20/07:
Hello dear reader. Its me, little Andy, calling with my happy sweet voice. My foster mom says I have turned into the perfect amazon - beautiful, loving, healthy, full of fun and able to entertain myself as long as chewable toys are provided. Now we have a little problem - I have been in my foster home for a while now and am very comfortable. I love my mom and the other birds and they love me too. But there are a lot of other birds here and my mom says I am so special and loving that I really need to have my own home. The longer I stay here the harder it is going to be on me to leave this "flock". I'm waiting for someone with a comfortable home and space for a big cage and maybe a couple other friendly birds to visit and invite me home. If that sounds like your place, please contact the amazon coordinator. I can have my toys and goody bag packed soon.
Update 5/30/07: Stop! Look! And listen! If you walk by my cage you probably won't hear much of anything except the steady crunching of Harrison Pellets or wood toys. I love to chew. I am also very quiet and when I do make noise I use my indoor voice. I work hard all day splintering all my toys and crushing all my pellets and my foster mom laughs at the piles of mess I make and then turns on the vacuum. I am working on "step up". I know how to do it but with only one eye my perception is slightly off and I become a little anxious and look like I'll bite. I don't really bite though - just need to test with my beak before I step. If you want a nice quiet beautiful bird that entertains himself but also likes time with you, I might be the one.
Update 3/11/07: Today is Andy's first day out of his cage other than for baths. He has been insecure about his footing outside the cage until now. Inside the cage he is a total whiz - knows exactly how far to reach with his foot on the blind side to grab a perch or toy. He LOVES toys especially one where he moves plastic rings up and over an arch. He seems to use his beak a lot to compensate for the missing sight. He is a very vocal bird - no contact calls other than whistles but lots of chatter and animal sounds. He is absolutely ready for his new home - sweet, trusting, and interactive.

Update 3/3/07: Hello! Since my last note to you I have made lots of progress. The incision where my right eye used to be is healing nicely. I am eating well too- lots of new good things to taste. I love almonds, sugar snap peas, grapes and apples and all the other things my foster mom puts in the dish. At first I was afraid to get off the high perch where I was sitting under a cage cover and just wanted to protect my sore head. Slowly I came down to check out the soft food dish. It took several days before I began to explore the whole cage because I have to keep turning my head back and forth a lot so I can see. Now I climb up and down and go to each dish and have found all the new toys. I've also had several spray showers and really enjoyed the warm mist falling on my face. I know how to step up and just need my mom to move slowly so I can get my bearings when we leave my cage. I have been on medication and have to be taken out of the cage in a towel and this is very stressful for me. My mom shows me the towel and lets me taste and bite it first. It still isn't nice but she slowly catches me and gives me the medicine. Today I wiggled out of the towel and climbed up on her wrist. While we were having a tender moment, I kept reaching up with my beak to kiss her. I guess she liked it because it made her cry. She told me I am brave and beautiful.

Hi! I'm Andy a 20 +/- year old Blue Fronted amazon who was just surrendered to Mickaboo. I had a chronic eye problem that steadily got worse and I didn't get any treatment. Mickaboo arranged to have me dropped off at an avian vet for an evaluation before I went to my new foster home. Talk about timing and being in the right place at the right time! Within a few days, I was in surgery to have my eye removed. The vet said my eye was a mess. I don't have the words to tell you about the pain and discomfort I've experienced before Mickaboo. And I don't feel all that terrific right now but the worst is over and I'll be fine soon. I have a history of being a wonderful companion. I am a very quiet bird, saying only a few words and whistles and seem content to play with my new toys. If I sound like a bird you'd like to meet I should be able to put you on my schedule in the next couple of weeks. Please don't go away - wait for me.
