Hi there! I am a particularly tiny blue budgie who has had quite an exciting life so far. It's been so exciting, in fact, that I had the distinction of being chosen as this month's "Featured Bird" for Mickaboo. You see, it all started when I was attacked by a cat. That's why I don't have any tail feathers - the cat took them all. Well, let me tell you, being attacked by a cat is kind of like a human being attacked by a Great White Shark and living to tell about it. That's what happened with me.
After the cat was done with me, some kind person found me and brought me to the animal shelter. That was a good thing, but once I got to the shelter, things took a turn for the worse. The put me in a room full of - you guessed it - cats! Well, that was just plain rude! Even though the cats were in cages, it was pretty scary to have them all staring at me. Plus, I had some pretty nasty injuries from my own cat attack, so I just didn't feel good. Even though the shelter people knew I'd been attacked by a cat, they let me languish in that shelter for a whole week until a day they call my "review date" when their vet finally examined me. And then I was pronounced "OK!" Well, that really wasn't the case. I'm sure their vet meant well, but was probably used to looking at dogs and cats, and overlooked the injuries on my tiny blue-feathered body. One of the gashes was a whole centimeter long, which is like a human having a cut of nine inches with no stitches or other medical treatment. Well, after all that time of leaving my recovery to chance, and overlooking my injuries, the shelter finally said that I was free to be adopted.
That's when the Mickaboo people came and fetched me. They knew that budgies don't get attacked by cats and come out "OK", so they took me directly to an Avian Vet. And it's a good thing they did. I could tell that guy knew all about little budgies like me. He immediately showed the Mickaboo folks where my injuries were and how severe they were. He also started me on antibiotics right away. You see, cats have some very bad bacteria in their mouths, and cat bites are usually fatal within the first 24-48 hours (well, fatal for us budgies, anyway). The Avian Vet said that I must have had a very strong immune system to have survived for a whole week with no treatment, and also that I am one very lucky budgie.
And then, to make the good news even better, something else happened - there was a lady working at the Avian Vet's office helping to take care of me. She is a Registered Vet Tech, and she fell in love with me! Yup, she's going to take me home and give me a place that will be safe from any more cats. And she says that she can even take me to work with her sometimes. Won't that be cool? So, you see, I'm a very tiny, but very strong, little budgie who has had more than my share of adventures in life. And that's why they picked me as this month's "Featured Bird".
Progress report: My new Mom named me "Blau Mer" which means "Blue Ocean" in German, and says that after only a couple of weeks with her, I am already talking human!
