UPDATE 3/30/2006: Paco has almost fully recovered. Recently, he was actually holding an almond in his foot while munching on it! He was very wobbly, but managed. The only accommodation he really needs is a Happy Hut to sleep in. Before that he tended to fall off his perch at night. His legs are still weaker than normal. He's just now able to support himself on one foot, and he still has a bit of trouble keeping himself groomed so needs help with regular showers. Paco has become acclimated to people. He likes head scratches and likes to hang out with people. He's learned to say 'Hello!? and greets everyone who walks into the room. He even walks up to the other parrots and says 'Hello!?. He has the typical conure voice, but is actually pretty quiet for a conure. He vocalizes early in the morning until I feed him breakfast. I've at least convinced him that morning is really a bit later than 6AM?.. Occasionally he'll vocalize in the afternoon around 5PM, but not every day, and not for very long. He's so ready for someone who has more time to spend with him! Chris Davis, the "Bird Lady," always says, "Love your birds for what they are, not for what you think they should be." If you can follow that advice, I could be a very special addition to your life. I'm Paco, a cherry-headed conure. My sex and age are a mystery to humans, but it is thought I may be an older bird. Over a year ago, I was found in a cardboard box outside a Home Depot, as close to dead as a bird can be and come back. My problem was basically neurological, either a virus or poison. Luckily, Mickaboo stepped up and made sure I got the vet care and long-term attention I needed. I'm now much better but I still have weakness in my feet and occasional awkwardness. Because of that, I need a carefully set-up cage with lots of opportunity for me to exercise safely. I love to look out the window and you must protect me from flying off, as I am not strong enough to survive out there. My foster parents say I have the mind of a wild bird -- very watchful and easily spooked. But I have made a lot of progress with people and now I will step up on a wrist (hands are still too scary) and allow a head scratch if you move very slowly. True, I have been known to bite hard but only if startled. Given time and patience, I could be a very good friend. We conures have a reputation for being noisy, but I usually limit my squawking to a "let's start the day" reveille in the morning. I like to start the day with good food. Pellets were no problem for me and I now have a diet of those crunchy things plus a soft mash of grains, veggies and fruits. My weakness is junk food, but I will count on you to keep my meals healthy! Can I also count on you to help me be all that I can be and to love me for what I am?
