Spanky is a sweet, older green-cheek conure whose owner had to relinquish him because of changed life circumstances. We don't know his exact age or gender ("he" has never laid an egg, though!). Spanky lived for 16 years with his former owner, who had received him from a neighbor. He was loved in his old home, is in good health now, and seems to be a well-adjusted bird.

Spanky has been on mainly a seed diet but likes a variety of foods, so there is room for improvement. He is playful, tame, and affectionate. He will step up and flip over on his back for you. He loves to chew on things. He enjoys showers and baths and listening to music. He says his name and perhaps some other words and phrases. He loves preening and being close to his favorite human and especially snuggling in long hair or sitting on top of your head and making a nest to take a nap.

There are just a few things he doesn't like or that scare him, most of which seem to reflect his peace-loving nature: He is afraid of the dark when out of his cage; he dislikes loud noises, excessively bright colors, and angry or aggressive people. He seems to have good intuition about human emotions and moods. He avoids people who seem stressed or angry until they calm down, and sometimes will bite those who try to force the issue. The high energy of children also can make him nippy. He gives warning nips, though, and bites only if he has good reason or feels he's being treated unfairly.

Spanky is the best conure ever! said his former owner. I wish I didn't have to give him up.
