Hello, I'm Mambo, or Mambo Jambo, if you want to be silly. Silly actually sounds pretty good for a change. Most of my life has been pretty lonely and stressful. I'm a 5-year-old Peach Faced Lovebird (although one veterinarian says I'm actually a hybrid, since my beak is pink, not horn colored). Five years ago, a lady brought me home from a pet store thinking I could be a friend to her other lovebird. Great idea - but you know what? We just couldn't hit it off! Can you believe that? Two lovebirds who don't like each other? Well, let me tell you, it happens sometimes. So after keeping me isolated for 4 years in a separate room, that lady decided I might be happier in another home, so she gave me to Mickaboo. But I wasn't happier at first. I was really scared. You see, no one had interacted with me for so long, the sudden change to a new house with new people (and they wanted to TOUCH me!), all of it just stressed me out so much, it almost scared me to death. I had started plucking my feathers when I was living alone, but in a strange new setting with all those people, I didn't know what was happening and I really began chewing myself to pieces. My foster parents got worried and took me to the vet. They did lots of tests and decided I didn't have any terrible diseases (thank goodness!), but my plucking had gotten so bad that I had started bleeding, and they were worried about a wound infection. So they put me on heavy antibiotics, which made me lethargic and gave me indigestion. OK. Now it starts to get better. My foster parents cut way back on the antibiotics, and I'm feeling a lot perkier. We're working on the feather problem too. They fitted me with a collar, and those shoulder feathers started growing right back. Hopefully, I'll be a beautiful, fully-feathered bird again soon. But the real change is, I'm SO much happier now. I used to cry at night, but not any more. My foster parents say I'm very easy going, sociable and chatty. And I discovered I'm not afraid of people either. I LIKE being around people, even strangers. I'm really a pretty friendly guy. I'll step up for you. I step right out of the cage onto my human's hand every morning. I like sitting on her shoulder and chewing on her ear, but I don't bite when she picks me up. I really like being outdoors in my cage, soaking up the sun and chirping with the wild birds. I don't know whether I'll ever meet another lovebird I like, but if you give me lots of love and attention, I'll bet I could be a really great friend to you!
