Volunteer of the Year: Dara Torgerson

By Sarah Lemarié

Congratulations to Dara Torgerson as our 2023 Mickaboo Volunteer Of The Year! Dara has been active across our equipment, conure, macaw, wild conure, and outreach teams, and handled a number of more complicated intakes for us in 2023. Dara is also fostering multiple species for us with the help and support of her family. Thank you so much Dara for all of your hard work and dedication to the birds! Read more in our 2023 CEO letter announcement and in our recent feature on Dara from earlier this year.

Saga's Journey

By Megan Cowdell and Giselle Stancic

Saga, a male cockatiel, started his day on September 21, 2023, pretty much like the others. He was alone in the house because his previous owner had a medical emergency. No one even knew he was there until the owner’s daughter heard some sounds and “unearthed him” (her words) from what was a serious hoarding situation. The daughter was returning to her out-of-state home later that week and needed to find a place for the bird fast. View in a new window

In Memoriam: Fred Cox

By Giselle Stancic

The Mickaboo community was deeply saddened to learn that one of our most beloved volunteers, Fred Cox, passed away on October 21, 2023. (Fred is pictured at right, along with another recently-deceased Mickaboo volunteer, Louisa Jaskulski, at one of our holiday parties.) Fred made an unforgettable imprint on our organization through his kindness, humor, generosity, and willingness to help out wherever and whenever he could for the birds of Mickaboo. Even as his own health declined, Fred continued to provide time, resources, and support to Mickaboo’s birds and volunteers. View in a new window

Bird of the Month

By The Editor

Hi, I`m Bongo. I was living with my owner and another bird until they went abroad, and then I spent almost a year homeless with lots of different people trying to take care of me. It got pretty stressful and we got moved around a lot in all kinds of ways. People were trying to help but they didn`t understand that macaws are big and loud and need a lot of space! Everyone kept passing us on. Eventually someone asked Mickaboo to help. I`m in a proper sized cage now with a much healthier diet and people who know how to safely take care of me. Could you be my next forever home? I need someone who will keep me for the rest of my (very) long life!   Read More...
